  Introducing Intermediate School
Clubs and Activities

Dear Intermediate School Families,

We believe that Intermediate School students should begin to engage in extracurricular activities in a way Lower School students do not (beyond Parker PM and outside of the normal school day), but that they should do so gradually, over time, beginning to relate to peers and teachers outside of the structure of the classroom. This is in keeping with the important Intermediate School themes of broadening perspectives and encouraging greater independence. We do not, however, believe that 4th and 5th graders should be over-scheduled, anxious about participation in activities or so committed to extracurriculars that sleep, schoolwork or a child’s playfulness suffer. Please review the this year’s activities below and share them with your child. Your children’s teachers will also present the options to them in school. We have sought to achieve balance with the offerings but intentionally wish to keep them appropriate for the age group.

Open to all interested 4th and 5th graders before school:

Parker Pacers with Mr. McPharlin,
Starting on Friday, September 16 through Friday, November 4
Fridays 7:30–8 a.m. | Meets in Mr. McPharlin’s room (232)

Start the day with a dose of creativity! The Big Shop’s scrap wood, tile, yarn and other oddities are available for art making. Trinkets, figures, sculptures and other fun things will be made.

Homework Club with Ms. Howe and Ms. Hrobon,

Mondays and Wednesdays 3:15–4:30 p.m. | Meets in the Library
Homework Club is a supervised study time open only to 4th and 5th grade students. Homework Club provides a quiet, studious and relaxed environment for students to practice beneficial study habits, complete homework and enjoy independent reading. Please click here to sign up your student for Homework Club. We do want students to sign up so we can plan carefully and know who to expect.

Students join these music programs through the Music Department:

Cadet Orchestra with Ms. Hikawa,
Starting on Thursday, September 22
Thursdays 7:30–8:05 a.m. | Meets in Room 205
Student instrumentalists in the Intermediate School are eligible for the Cadet Orchestra (grades 3–5) based on their ability and playing level. Formal and informal performance opportunities will occur throughout the year. Students are encouraged to arrive five minutes early to tune and be ready to start on time.

Mosaic Music Ensemble with Mr. Denien,
Starting on Wednesday, September 21
Wednesdays 7:30–8 a.m. | Meets in Choir Room
Inspired by the tradition of the Genesis Gospel Choir, this group will explore multiculturalism through the music of different cultures including world music, gospel music and folk music. Formal and informal performance opportunities will occur throughout the year. Grades 3–5 will meet from 7:30 to 8:05 a.m. and grades 1 and 2 will meet from 8:05 to 8:25 a.m. Periodically grades 1 and 2 will come earlier to join grades 3–5 for large group musical experiences.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the club sponsor or myself.
