Faculty Present on Technology Integration

As our society becomes increasingly invested in advancements in technology, educators struggle with incorporating these new tools in ways that stay true to a school’s mission and pedagogical beliefs. Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) is dedicated to supporting this integration of technology in education, and this year, Integrated Learning and Information Science (ILIS) department members Sarah Beebe and Mary Catherine Coleman will run a hands-on workshop at its 2019 Conference in Schaumburg.

Beebe and Coleman will walk participants through specific projects they lead with Kindergarten-aged students. “These projects can serve as building blocks in the creation of a meaningful introduction to a Maker Empowerment, Coding and Technology Design program that incorporates literacy and reading standards for young students,” said these two educators. “They also can serve as additions to an already-robust program.” Participants will use a variety of age-appropriate robots and apps and work with LEGOs to build knowledge and experience for introducing these concepts to young students through storytelling. Beebe and Coleman will also provide examples of other projects educators can use with young students.
