Fourth Graders Bilingually “Piece Together” Their Identities
Fourth grade students recently completed an interdisciplinary unit that addressed their knowledge of Spanish vocabulary for personal descriptions and colors, in conjunction with a Social-Emotional Learning unit on identity led by the Counseling Department.
In both their homeroom and Spanish classrooms, students self-reflected, chose words that best match their self-identified characteristics and then wrote about themselves in English and Spanish using color to represent their defining characteristics. Students then created puzzle-piece artwork to represent all parts of them coming together to make the whole.
The students’ writings and artwork are displayed on the bulletin boards between the 3rd grade atrium and the Intermediate School hallway, as students ask, “What pieces come together to make you whole?”
