Biology Students Visited By Expert in Advanced Biotech Treatments

Recently, Parker’s 9th grade Biology students were wrapping up their study of genetics and welcomed a presentation on the four main branches of advanced biotech treatments by Parker parent Dr. David Lennon.

Dr. Lennon is president and CEO of a stealth startup company based in Cambridge, Mass. Previously, he served as president of Novartis Gene Therapies, where he was responsible for the research, development and commercialization of gene therapies for rare, childhood genetic diseases. In his 20-year career, he and his family have lived and worked in the U.S., Switzerland, Japan and China. Dr. Lennon holds a Ph.D. in cell biology from Cornell University and a B.A. in biophysics from Columbia University. He is a board member of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, an industry group focused on advancing cutting-edge medicines.

Students in Advanced Biology had developed a bioethics project on genetic technology and welcomed Dr. Lennon’s expert words on the four main branches of treatment—gene therapy, gene editing, cell therapy and tissue therapy. “While we cover these topics in Biology,” Upper School Science teacher Bridget Lesinski said, “the students appreciated seeing the real-life applications of this technology and the business connection to scientific research.”

While Parker strives to provide educational programming that brings the “outside in and the inside out,” having experts in the field speak to our students about the practical uses of their lessons helps solidify this knowledge and showcases how to use it to have an impact in the world after graduation.
