May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and the Upper School affinity group Asian Alliance took the month as a time to celebrate their culture. For the duration of the month, the club collaboratively created a “Periodic Table” of notable Asian figures from the past and the present. These ranged from actors to singers, from activists to authors. The periodic table will be displayed in the Science Wing until the end of the month!
In addition, the affinity group held a Ramen Fundraiser. During lunch, the affinity group displayed a plethora of types of ramen from different East Asian countries. Members of the Parker community were able to purchase the ramen, with proceeds going toward paying for bystander training for the Upper School affinity group heads with Asian Americans Advancing Justice. The fundraiser was set up on two occasions with different selections of ramen so that students and faculty could try as many variations as possible.
This past week music by Asian artists and bands was played in the hall during the Upper School passing period. Songs were played by artists ranging from BTS to Arooj Aftab to Beabadoobee. The entire Upper School was invited to add to the playlist. Sharing music is a great way to connect and learn about Asian culture collaboratively.
Finally, the club hosted a meeting where they celebrated the graduating seniors, including senior Co-President Johnny Mansueto. Members were able to congratulate the seniors, as well as enjoy bao and dumplings from Wow Bao.
The club concluded the month by announcing leadership for the 2023–24 school year. The club is extremely glad the school was able to celebrate AAPI Month as a community and cannot wait to see what next year brings!
