New Student Art Ushers in a New Year

Art teachers have recently adorned the school’s halls with a range of work to welcome the new year with a creative flourish.

One great way to beat the cold, gray Chicago winter weather is to soak in the color and energy of student art. New work fills the hallways to help put pink back in a person’s cheeks and warm up their heart.

The school encourages the community to stop by and enjoy prints from senior Jarin Pressman’s Independent Study in photography entitled, “Chicago: Through a Lens,” which shows the way he captures the unique characteristics of a selection of Chicago neighborhoods in imagery.

Upper School Art Studio students have photography, paintings, drawings and more for viewers to feast their eyes. Some 5th graders have been creating self-directed pieces while others have been fabricating fanciful structures out of cardboard, ranging from skyscrapers to stadiums, dream homes to bakeries and beyond.

Visitors can peruse a wide assortment of 7th and 8th grade “Wonderful, Original Works of Art” or W.O.W. projects. Each piece has a label featuring the work’s title, its materials and a statement from the artist about its inspiration. W.O.W. projects reflect a tremendous amount of thought and effort and manifest a unique representation of a student-artist and where they are in their creative journey.

Senior Kindergarten students have been exploring the ocean in woodshop, and 3rd grade craftspeople have created clinging wind chimes. Parker’s 1st grade students constructed puppet self-portraits, which were videotaped in action. These videos are offered via QR codes below each puppet on display.

Enjoy videos of the 1st grade puppets in action below and a sampling of other work available here.
