6 - 8
Students explore different branches of mathematics, while reinforcing familiar concepts. Teachers generate most materials, drawing from a wide variety of resources, including The Aims Foundation and Challenge Math, making connections with other subjects when appropriate. Students have access to classroom calculators.
Sixth graders often think that all there is to mathematics is arithmetic. While arithmetic is certainly fundamental, students experience the richness, beauty and practicality that mathematics has to offer. The Standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics is integral to instruction, as well as the four goals for communication, reasoning, problem solving and connections. Sixth graders study arithmetic, algebra, probability, permutations and geometry. Curricular highlights include an investigation of the powers of 2 and the use of Geometer Sketchpad software to explore geometric properties and relationships.
