These Shoes are Made for Dancing at ¡Martes Social!
Pause, two, three, four, pause, six, seven, eight! The 4th and 5th graders in the IS Spanish enrichment club ¡Martes Social! challenged their taste buds and their dancing skills this month. First, students took positive risks during our shared breakfast by trying a new food: empanandas. Students tried a wide variety of the stuffed bread pockets filled with everything from traditional cheese or spinach to a more modern twist of bacon or chicken curry.
After voting for their favorites, students burned off some of those emapandas by putting on their dancing shoes! Students reviewed the idea that, while originating in the Caribbean, mambo music at its core has its roots in the African continent. With images of musical instruments, such as the flute, piano, bongos and the cajón, students looked at how typical American jazz instruments combined with traditional Afro-Cuban instruments to make new and lively sounds. With the new instrumentation, as well as a little help from the Queen and King of Mambo, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, students were ready to try out a few moves of their own!
Students will wrap up this year’s exploration of fascinating aspects of the Hispanic culture next month, so mark your calendar for the last ¡Martes Social! meeting on Tuesday, May 15. Any Intermediate School student interested should RSVP on the Parent Portal to join in on the fun!
