Learning with Dance in 7th Grade

by Languages and Cultural Studies Co-Chair Liz Villagómez

For the past 11 years, the 7th graders have embarked on a journey to learn a cultural dance from a particular Spanish speaking country. Students learn about the history of the dance, choreograph a particular song, then learn and rehearse the dance they present to the community. Every year, the Latin Dancing Morning Ex revolves around a theme and this year’s theme was travel. With a traveling lens they researched the country their dance was from and highlighted cities, towns, museum, monuments, food and other valuable cultural components to consider while traveling to such countries. The students also researched some local restaurants where people could go eat and try some authentic cuisine. Teaching students how to Latin dance has become a fun and intriguing way to learn about the Latino culture.
