Movement, Music and Merengue in 7th Grade

For the past 12 years, 7th graders have embarked on a journey to learn a cultural dance from a particular Spanish-speaking country. Students learn about the history of the dance, its country of origin and the composer of each song. After several rehearsals, the students have a complete choreographed dance they present to the community. Every year, the Latin Dance Morning Ex revolves around a theme; this year’s theme was celebrating the diverse array of Latin music. The music showcased a Tangos from Spain, a Merengue from the Dominican Republic, a Brazilian Salsa and an Afro-Brazilian/Samba. Teaching students how to Latin dance is a fun and engaging way to not only learn the steps, but also to experience, celebrate and honor the culture and the people connected to each song, dance and style of music.
