Exploring Artistic Behavior

In Art Department Co-Chair Kay Silva’s Intermediate and Middle School classes, the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) philosophy of art education, which provides learners with personally meaningful, choice-based art experiences, guides instruction. TAB classrooms are student-directed, constructivist learning environments using design thinking and the Studio Habits of Mind from Harvard University’s Project Zero.

 

Students assume the role of artists working in a community studio, exploring their own ideas, interests and passions. Artist statements help students reflect on, write about and present their work.

 

Silva explained, “This approach focuses more on their authentic creative processes and less on technical expertise.”
