JK Engages in Peaceful Action

Junior Kindergarten students have been exploring what social justice looks like in the world around us, both past and present. Teachers and learners are discussing what people do for change, how we make change and how we can use our voices to speak out for what we believe in and care for in the world.

In observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, students immersed themselves in a range of books and videos, learning about Dr. King and Gandhi, who took action and marched to change laws for people of color, as well as those who have recently marched peacefully in support of Black Lives Matter protests. Throughout their work, teachers emphasized the importance of a great number of people showing up to demonstrate their support for an idea and how one person does not make a “march.”

To put their recent lessons into practice, Junior Kindergarten teachers provided the supplies for students to make colorful and creative signage featuring the things that were meaningful to each of them and hit the pavement in the school’s Webster Avenue parking lot to stage a peaceful march, where teachers and older students alike enthusiastically supported them.
