Secrets of Success Welcomes Former U.S. Congressman David Trott

The Parker community learned about the life of a congressman from former U.S. Representative David Trott at this week’s Secrets of Success meeting. Junior Ari Harris and his sibling, freshman Skye Harris, created this club to inspire and motivate the community by sharing the paths of successful entrepreneurs and executives. The club’s guest speakers have included a Hollywood talent agent and the president of an NBA basketball team. With the recent transition of the administration, Trott’s story was a relevant addition to the political conversation.

Trott served two terms as a representative of Michigan’s 11th District from 2015 to 2019. He talked about his path to that role and beyond, from earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan through his time in the House of Representatives. The Harris siblings asked thoughtful questions that led to discussions about the inner workings of Congress, Trott’s interactions with politicians, including President Joe Biden, and general advice to those interested in working in politics.

In addition to maintaining a strong team, Trott’s most important recommendation, to keep moving forward in any career path, was to “keep good people rooting for you.”

After hearing from Trott, Ari said, “My biggest takeaway is that Washington might not be as bitterly divided as often portrayed. Congressman Trott shared that most members on both sides of the aisle actually do get along and collaborate.”

Secrets of Success aims to have a few more guest speakers this semester. Ari hopes the Parker community will continue showing up to learn from the experts. “It is a great opportunity for students and faculty to see how other people reached success so they can try to replicate a similar path for their own success.”

These opportunities are an example of bringing the outside in and allowing Parker students to see the power of one’s agency in creating real change in our democracy.
