Check Out the Parent Education Resource

Check out the Parent Education Resource (PER) for reading and listening suggestions during February Recess!

This week we have added two books with personal stories about disability:

From the Periphery: Real Life Stories About Disability documents the oppression people with disabilities face and features stories from many Chicagoans, including Parker alum Rachel Arfa ’96, Commissioner for the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist is a candid, intimate and irreverent memoir by renowned activist Judith Heumann, whose work resulted in systemic changes in legal protections for people with disabilities and who later served in leadership positions in the Clinton and Obama administrations.

We have also added two poetry collections, Native Guard and Monument, by Natasha Trethewey, who is the Jeanne Harris Hansell Visiting Poet 2021 and will be speaking at Parker on April 1. Also new to the PER is her memoir, Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir, which was published this past summer.

The PER also features “Code Switch,” a podcast that explores how race impacts culture, identity and politics.
