Spring Flowers Bring Friendly Smiles

Nothing can lift one’s spirits quite like the bright colors and fresh aromas of fresh-cut flowers, and a group of 6th grade students recently assembled and delivered custom arrangements to members of the school community as part of an outreach activity.

 

During a normal school year, Middle School students would engage directly with one of a number of community sites as part of their Parker Partners community service program. Faculty familiar with the Random Acts of Flowers site have experience recycling and repurposing flowers via donations to individuals in healthcare facilities. Connecting their prior work with our immediate community in a time of COVID, 6th grade math teacher Robin Masters combined forces with assistant teacher Ian Barillas-McEntee for a similar project with their advisees.

 

Students first brainstormed a list of recipients around the school they wanted to surprise with flowers. Next, they composed personal, handwritten notes of gratitude and appreciation and sealed them in envelopes. At the next gathering, they each assembled their own arrangements in mason jars, which they hand-delivered to each recipient.

 

Masters shared, “It was a great joy observing the consideration and effort our students took while writing the notes and arranging the flowers.”

 

Those who received an arrangement proudly displayed it on their desks for the days that followed. Thanks to the Masters/Barillas-McEntee Advisory for bringing so many smiles to campus this spring!
