Student Art Show Fosters Community

Although this academic year has looked very different from years past at Parker, employees in the Parker PM program have never stopped searching for ways to create and foster a sense of community and togetherness among the JK through 5th grade students for whom they provide care and excitement after school each day.

A few weeks back, the Parker PM team was brainstorming activities to keep the kids happy and engaged after classes ended, and the idea of having an art show appealed to everyone. They first developed a list of age-appropriate artworks that students might create for the show, then devoted a series of afternoons to making all the art.

JK students, led by Liz MacGilpin, used tape to create graphic designs on canvas, painted the canvases, and removed the tape to reveal unexpected art. With the help of Anzetta Cherry, SK students sketched out sculptures on paper and recreated them in a 3D space using Model Magic. First grade students made collaborative paper mosaics with Molly Carberry, and members of the 2nd grade Kindness Club, led by Alexa Erbach, made custom t-shirts with decals, iron-ons and fabric markers. Third grade students tried their hand at some original action photography, assisted by David Ferreira Hersh. Together with Anne DaSilva, 4th and 5th grade artists made original paintings and designs with buttons.

Organizers originally intended for the art show to be open only to PPM students and teachers, but beautiful weather brought the show outdoors, allowing more teachers and community members who were already on campus to stop by after school and share the event.

“All the Parker PM students and teachers loved the event,” shared Parker PM Director Stacie Newmark. “It really felt good to be able to come together in a safe, creative and beautiful way.”

Newmark sincerely appreciated all the efforts of her staff as well as the wonderful creations produced as part of this art show. Many thanks to Chef Zac and Pastry Chef Sue for providing an extra-special snack for the event!
