Faculty Featured in “The Reading Teacher”

While members of the Parker community may be accustomed to the brilliance of our fabulous faculty, Lower School Literacy Specialist Heidi Byrnes-Cloet, Ph.D. recently shared her expertise in the International Literacy Association’s The Reading Teacher, a journal that “provides the latest peer-reviewed, research-based best practices to literacy educators working with children.”

The article Byrnes-Cloet published with co-author Susan Hill, “Writing Play-Books with Linguistically Diverse Young Learners,” presents a study where early childhood educators worked with linguistically diverse children to write and enact play-based books as a means to support literate language and identity development in an engaging and effective way.”

“It’s exciting to share my research and passion for progressive education with an international audience of educators and caregivers,” Byrnes-Cloet said. “The article presents ways to harness children's universal interests in storytelling, play, friendship and community-building to support important early literacy skills. My hope is that the ideas we share can help make the challenging work of becoming a reader and writer a more joyful and affirming journey for all young learners.”

At Parker, we strive to instill in our students that learning is a lifelong process, and we are very proud that Byrnes-Cloet’s publication in this journal highlights this belief in action.
