A Return to the Ceramics Studio

Although everyone worked tirelessly to adapt to the new reality of working and learning from home during the COVID crisis, the lockdown hit some areas of the school harder than others. One area that proved to be especially challenging was the Art Department’s approach to ceramics. This only stands to reason as the Ceramics Studio—with its one-stop shop of numerous supplies and tools, such as ceramics wheels—is a useful tool that is difficult to recreate.

While Parker’s fabulous faculty rose to the occasion, the return to school was a welcome change. “We are so grateful to be back teaching and learning in person in the well-appointed Ceramics Studio after a challenging experience teaching and learning to work with clay at home via Zoom,” visual arts teacher and Department Co-Chair Kay Silva shared. With their return, students in US Ceramics have been hard at work creating both hand-built and wheel-thrown pieces of functional and sculptural ceramic objects.

We are very proud of the efforts of our faculty and students, and we look forward to seeing the other great pieces that will make their way out of the Ceramics Studio.
