Living Latin Culture Through Music and Dance

Since 2007, 7th graders have embarked on a journey to learn a cultural dance from a particular Spanish-speaking country. Students learn about the history of the dance, its country of origin and the composer of each song. After several rehearsals, the students have a complete choreographed dance they present to the community. Every year, the Latin Dance Morning Ex revolves around a theme; this year’s theme was living the Latin-American culture throughout the music and dance. The music showcased a cumbia from Perú, a merengue from the Dominican Republic, a salsa from Colombia and a bachata from USA/Dominican Republic.

Teaching students Latin dances is a fun and engaging way to not only learn the steps, but also to experience, celebrate and honor the culture and the people connected to each song, dance and style of music.
