Poetry and Photography Combine in Upper School

Upper School English teacher Alicia Abood and Upper School photography teacher Katie Palmer created an opportunity for Parker writers and photographers to collaborate through poetry.

Photo students provided images to inspire writers in creating poems, and writers wrote poems to inspire photographers to make images. Students were given full freedom in terms of topics and styles they wanted to explore for both the writing and photography. Senior Kavee Kirschner Alvarez said, “As a photographer and poet, I think both forms of expression are quite similar in terms of the art form and creativity that go into them, and in some cases they actually go hand in hand, so it was nice to be able to try and combine the two forms, especially when you are not the photographer and have to base the poem you are writing on the given image.”

The resulting work is on display in the Kupcinet Gallery this month.
