Come Support the US Musical: Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist-shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly, Seymour.” The musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway, where it had a five-year run.

The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it blood. As time passes, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and intent towards global domination!

The cast of 15 Upper School students takes on this horror comedy rock musical under the direction of Upper School Drama teacher Cassie Slater. The music direction has been guided by Upper School Choir teacher Justin de la Cruz. Scenic design and construction have been completed by the Stage Craft class of 12 Upper School students, under the guidance of Nick Rupard. 

Don’t miss these four performances! The show opens on Wednesday, March 15 at 5 p.m. with a post-show reception sponsored by the Parents’ Association. Additional performances are Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. or Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. Given the dark-themed nature of the comedy in the show and depictions of violence against a woman, this show is recommended for audiences older than 12. Parental guidance is recommended for audience members between the ages of 12 and 18.
