A Visit to a Sculptor’s Studio

Upper School student-artists recently visited renowned African American sculptor Richard Hunt’s home and studio to learn more about his life and creative process.

Upper School students in Kay Silva’s Sculpture and Art Studio classes have spent the semester creating their own work using their choice of design and materials. To add to their classes, Silva wanted them to see a master artist in action to connect their own experience with someone practicing art as a profession.

Silva had recently learned that the 90-year-old Hunt lives and works only a few blocks from Parker in a space he has used since the ’70s! This 87-year-old artist rarely gives tours, but when but when his studio director and sculptor Eric W. Stephenson agreed to welcome her and her students, she jumped at the chance for her students to meet a famous artist in his own environment.

Silva said, “All art students should witness working artists to see how they live and work and have the invaluable opportunity to talk with them about their conceptual ideas and process. Since Richard Hunt works with large-scale welded metal sculptures, the visit was a great way for students to learn about the 3D design, unfamiliar materials and alternate working methods firsthand.”
