Digital Health in the Intermediate School

By Sarah Beebe and Steven Files
Intermediate School students have been learning about digital communication, digital citizenship and navigation of technology. The 4th and 5th graders recently attended separate presentations in the Kovler Family Library, led by Lower and Intermediate School Technology Integration Specialist Sarah Beebe and JK–12th Grade Technology Assistant Steven Files. These conversations focused on responsible and appropriate use of technology, devices, the Internet, digital communications (e.g., group texts), appropriate usage regarding social media accounts and more. As technology becomes more integrated into our daily lives and communication norms, it is essential that IS students learn how to use it safely and responsibly.

During the 4th and 5th grade presentations, students heard about the importance of protecting personal information and the consequences of sharing too much information and participating in negative dialogue online. Students also learned about the risks and benefits of social media, text messaging and cyberbullying. Students discovered that 13 is the minimum age requirement for most social media sites. They heard that cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, embarrass or threaten someone, and we talked about how this behavior is unacceptable and can have serious consequences. We also discussed boundaries regarding photographing others, sharing pictures of others and guidelines in the Parker Handbook to protect them and provide thoughtful guidance for student conduct.

The Intermediate School students had thoughtful and insightful responses and questions, and we encouraged them to talk to their classroom teachers, us and parents/guardians at home if they had more specific inquiries. We always love hearing from parents/guardians, and are happy to answer any questions. Please feel free to contact us at any time at sbeebe@fwparker.org or sfiles@fwparker.org.
