Eighth Grade Connects Past and Present in Civil Liberties Studies

By 8th grade History and Social Studies teacher Stephanie Lorenzo

This week, Parker’s 8th grade class walked over to the Alphawood Gallery to see the original exhibition Then They Came for Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII and the Demise of Civil Liberties.

Students have been studying the impact of 9/11 on civil liberties and are working towards making connections with past American violations of civil liberties. The exhibit poses the questions: What does an American look like? Who is welcome in this country? What is every American’s duty in the face of racist government action? In examining this historical event from multiple perspectives we hope it provides a foundation that will enable us to understand themes of how power is abused and how the civil liberties of all people can and should be protected.
