Middle School Social Justice League Raises the Roof—Gingerbread Roofs, That Is!

The Middle School Social Justice League recently donated their time and talents to spread some holiday cheer to those less fortunate. Based on an idea shared by 8th grade Social Justice League member Ryder S., the group constructed gingerbread houses and donated them along with construction candies and frosting to Be Alright, a support network for domestic violence shelters across the city. A local domestic violence shelter used the donated gingerbread houses and materials for their annual family holiday party, where victims of domestic violence and their children decorated the houses together.

Be Alright was thrilled to receive the one dozen houses, as well as the sugary sweets with which to decorate them, and sent us photos of a few of the finished houses. Our students were thrilled to see how their houses were decorated and so glad to know the families had fun!

Meanwhile, the Social Justice League’s work never stops. The League will sponsor three bake sales after December Recess on Wednesdays, January 17, February 14 and March 21. A bevy of sweet treats (including gluten-free options) will be available, so stop by the Front Alcove of the school from 3 to 3:30 p.m. on those select days to satisfy your sweet tooth! All money will be donated to a Chicago area charity.

Finally, if your Middle School student is interested in creating positive change in our school and our community, please join us. The Middle School Social Justice League meets every Thursday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. in room 347. No experience is required, just a desire to reach out and affect social change. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the League’s sponsors: David Fuder (dfuder@fwparker.org), Karen Liszka (kliszka@fwparker.org) and Phenice Williams (pwilliams@fwparker.org).
