¡Martes Social! puts on their dancing shoes!
The rhythm is gonna get you! Our 4th and 5th graders in the IS Spanish Enrichment Club ¡Martes Social! put on their dancing shoes to learn more about the Hispanic musical styles of salsa and mambo. During a shared breakfast of pan dulce (sweet bread) and jugos de banana-fresa y mango (banana-strawberry and mango juices), students took some time to combine what they knew about the two musical styles with new information in order to take a deeper look.
Students were intrigued to know that, while originating in the Caribbean, at its core, salsa and mambo music have their roots in the African continent. With images of musical instruments, such as the flute and the piano, bongos and the cajón, students looked at how typical American jazz instruments combined with traditional Afro-Cuban instruments to make new and lively sounds. With the new instrumentation, as well as a little help from the Queen and King of Salsa and Mambo, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente, students were then ready to put on their dancing shoes and try out a few moves of their own!
We will continue to explore fascinating aspects of the Hispanic culture around us, so mark your calendar for this year's remaining ¡Martes Social! meetings on Tuesday, April 24 and Tuesday, May 15.
