March Mathness Brings Uberbowls and Scavenger Hunts

Student mathematicians got in the March Mathness spirit last week as Upper Schoolers competed in a math tournament while their Middle School counterparts participated in a mathematical scavenger hunt.

 

The Upper School Uberbowl competition proved to be a fast-paced, multi-round, competitive math matchup! Student Math Club members curated the questions, which spanned a variety of topics, including prime numbers and the infamous 21 question (combine the numbers 1, 5, 6, and 7 to make 21, using only the basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

 

Juniors and seniors competed in the Big Gym, with reigning Pi Day champion, senior Abhinav Goyal, serving as MC, while freshmen and sophomores occupied the Draft Gym, with junior Nicky Lerner serving as MC. The energy was high as Parker's mathematicians solved, reworked, discussed and thought their way to victory. Team Anna, Avani, Adele and Lindsay emerged as the winners from the Draft Gym, and there was even a tie-breaker question amongst the classes of 2018 and 2019, out of which Team Eugenia Cheng emerged victorious for their answer to the question: How many triangles are in the figure below?

While their Upper School peers toiled with trig in the gyms, Middle School students spread throughout their area of the school. These students worked collaboratively to solve fun and challenging math problems and checked their solutions with teachers throughout the Middle School area as part of a mathematical scavenger hunt.

 

No matter how you add it up, a great time was had by all!
