Author Kyle Lukoff Visits Parker

Parker recently welcomed author and librarian Kyle Lukoff for a gathering with 4th grade students that combined literacy with elements of their current work in diversity, equity and inclusion.

Librarian and Integrated Learning and Information Science teacher Mary Catherine Coleman brought Cole’s work to the attention of Lower School Literacy Specialist Hedi Byrnes-Cloet after Lukoff called to ask if Parker students and teachers would be interested in meeting him. Byrnes-Cloet felt Lukoff, an author of several children’s books about transgender identity, would be an ideal resource for the 4th grade team to use in discussing transgender identity in a developmentally appropriate way. The 4th grade teachers agreed.

While at Parker, Lukoff gathered with 4th grade students in the Harris Center to read from his book When Aidan Became A Brother, which celebrates changes in a transgender boy's life. Following the reading, he engaged the students in meaningful conversation about the story, asked them questions about themselves and shared some stories about his life. Lukoff then joined members of the Upper School PRIDE committee for lunch to help them kick of Pride week at Parker in grand form.
