MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow, 2019 Opus Prize Laureate and Parker parent Rami Nashashibi recently visited the school as Parker’s 22nd annual Francine C. Rosenberg Memorial Lecturer.
Nashashibi is executive director of the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), a community organization that fosters health, wellness and healing in inner-city Chicago by organizing for social change, cultivating the arts and operating a holistic health center.
Nashashibi also spent time on campus with students and teachers, including participating in an interview with a student journalist and visiting with students in 6th and 7th grade history classes, where he shared more about himself and his organization’s work and learned about the recent topics in their classes. Additionally, employees gathered with Nashashibi after classes ended.
In his public remarks later that evening, Nashashibi spoke passionately about the importance of thoughtfully minding the gaps we encounter in our myriad religious, social, civic and interpersonal experiences every day. He reminded the audience that each of our thoughtful responses to those moments in life where we witness the ideal and actual not meeting on the same plane provide us with true opportunities for resourceful citizenship.
Francis W. Parker School educates students to think and act with empathy, courage and clarity as responsible citizens and leaders in a diverse democratic society and global community.
