Students Collaborate to Make Comics

As a wrap-up to the semester, seniors from English teacher Mike Mahany’s Graphic Novels class worked with Miriam Pickus’ 4th grade on a collaborative project. After the 4th graders wrote short stories featuring animal characters solving a problem or navigating a crisis, each senior had to transform one story into a comic-book format, experimenting with techniques that they had discussed while reading.

The two grades met in pairs three times during the creation process: before the creating began, so the 4th graders could explain their vision; halfway through the process, so the 4th graders could see the progress and offer feedback; and at the end, when the pairs read the completed comics together. The project was a success, as students of each group enjoyed their interactions and shared creations.
