This year’s 8th annual Administrators of Color in Independent Schools Conference offered nearly 100 senior administrators of color working in independent schools from around the country a dedicated time and space for connection, mentoring and sharing.
During the two and half day event, those in attendance attended lectures from Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, executive coach Arivee Vargas and Professor of Education and African and African American Studies at Harvard University Jarvis R. Givens. They also met in affinity groups by role and participated in a networking lunch to share more with peers about their work and experience. Social gatherings also punctuated the event, including a welcome reception sponsored by Nemnet, a welcome dinner sponsored by Strategenius, a closing reception sponsored by The Glasgow Group and a Saturday brunch sponsored by Joy-Raising featuring MacArthur “genius” Amanda Williams.
Associate Principal Priyanka Rupani commented, “This year’s conference felt like the most connected and celebratory to date. In particular, with the pause on NAIS’ People of Color Conference, our participants were so grateful for the space that we created at Parker. Conferences like ours are so necessary for the well-being and nourishment of leaders of color in schools like Parker. We spent time learning from experts in various fields, shared knowledge and expertise with each other and poured into one another at a time that is fraught for educators of color. I’m so grateful that Parker continues to create space for such a meaningful gathering.”
