Parker Basketball Enters the New Year on Winning Note

With vacation in the rear-view mirror, Parker’s Basketball teams returned to the gym looking to add to their already impressive resumes.

Both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams entered the new year with winning records, with the Boys program sitting at 9-7 and the Girls program at 10-6, already having doubled their win total from last season.

From offseason workouts and shootarounds, and six days of week-of in-season practices, the improvement has been noticeable.

The Boys program is currently undefeated in conference play, boasting wins over U High and Latin, while also earning a second-place finish in their Thanksgiving tournament.

Meanwhile, the Girls program has rattled off eight wins in their last 10 games, setting their highest win total in more than six years with still half a season to go.

“A big component of why we’re having such a good season is teamwork and communication have definitely improved,” said senior Jojo Husbeck. “Our overall confidence and the way we’re trying to shape the program have improved. This is the first year when we really have the mentality to win games.”

The Colonels’ high-pressure defense has given their opponents fits, forcing nearly 30 turnovers a game within the past 10-game span, leading to a lot of easy scoring opportunities.

“We really realized this year that defense wins games,” added Husbeck. “Instead of trying to force an offense, we would rather just break down the other team and have really worked hard on perfecting our 1-3-1.”

The Boys are away for two games before returning home where Parker fan can catch them against U-High on January 27 for a potential conference title matchup.

The Girls team will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, January 20 against Regina.
