Visiting Professor Educates on Meta-Oppression

Loyola University Chicago Associate Professor of Philosophy and Department Chair Jacqueline Scott, PhD returned to educate juniors on the concept of “meta-oppression.”

Throughout their year-long Civic Lab program, juniors have been examining state and federal policies that have marginalized communities based on race, gender and immigration status. To help students understand how these systems compound, History teacher Andy Bigelow invited Dr. Scott, parent of Sam Forst ’24, to speak with juniors and enhance their ongoing work in their respective Civic Lab groups for the remainder of the year.

Dr. Scott’s research and teaching focuses on the formation (and malformation) of racialized identities in the U.S. and the ways racialized identities have helped (and hindered) the art of living for individuals and various communities.

Following Dr. Scott’s remarks, students asked questions and worked in small groups to discuss ways they might connect Dr. Scott’s remarks with their Civic Lab work.

Parker thanks Dr. Scott for taking the time to add to students’ educational experience.
