Fifth Grader Celebrates Frederick Douglas

Fifth grader Yael Gustafson traveled to Washington, D.C. to share his oratory skills at Frederick Douglass’ birthday celebration.

In November, Gustafson recited a speech he memorized by abolitionist Frederick Douglass at the U.S. National Park Service’s annual oratorical contest in Washington, D.C.—a performance that earned him 2nd place in the ages 9-11 division. This is the second year that Yael has finished in the winner bracket for the contest.

In honor of Douglass’ birthday in February, the National Park Service invited Gustafson back to the nation’s capital for a reprise recitation of his award winning speech, which he presented with gusto and a smile.
