As part of her Mind and Brain class, teacher Bridget Lesinski leads students in an exploration of topics like cognition, memory, sensation and perception, development, social psychology and psychological disorders. Lesinski frequently invites guest speakers to complement their assigned readings, writings and discussions, and Principal Dan Frank visited to share more about his educational background in psychology.
Dr. Frank talked about his research into the ways people cope with major life changes, like job loss, as part of his PhD thesis. He also wrote a book and a play about human development. He introduced students to the concept of dialectical thinking, a method of reasoning that reconciles opposing or contradictory ideas to find a deeper, more balanced truth.
Students were interested in learning how Dr. Frank used his psychology background in his role as principal. Dr. Frank was very generous with his time and even encouraged the mostly senior class to approach college with the suggestion to take one class each semester that has nothing to do with their intended career.
Parker thanks Dr. Frank for sharing his expertise and advice with students!
