French Culture Built in 7th Grade French

By Upper and Middle School French teacher Dr. Cynthia Marker
Seventh graders in French used materials from the TIDES Garage in the Kovler Family Library to assemble an impressively varied collection of French-themed art works.

Their astoundingly creative results, currently on display in the library, include a 3D replica of the Louvre pyramid; a lit-up facade of the Louis Vuitton flagship store; a hot-air balloon (une montgolfière); an Air France plane made out of cardboard; a handmade 3D rendering of the famous image Le Chat Noir; a whimsical rendition of La Joconde (the Mona Lisa); several authentic-looking luxury bags (Dior, Birkin and Vuitton); a collage featuring a wide array of French fashion; spruced-up versions of a baguette and a beignet; and a richly imaginative jewelry display as a representation of the recent Louvre heist. In their French class, students accompanied their ingenious artistic accomplishments with explanations en français of the inspiration for their creations.

We encourage everyone to check out the exhibit on their next visit to the Kovler Family Library. This project was made possible by our incomparable ILIS staff—un grand merci à Mme Wiltse et M. Bacon!—and our new world language curriculum in the Middle School.

Félicitations à ces étudiants pour leur génie artistique et leur célébration de la culture française!
