JK Parker Post Office Delivers Smiles

By ILIS Department Members Mary Catherine Coleman and Sarah Beebe
For the last several months, during their Library/ILIS classes, JKers have been on an incredible learning journey, all the way to the Galápagos Islands! Students explored the archipelago's diverse ecosystems and the remarkable animals that call it home. They also discovered one of the world's most unique post offices, tucked away on Floreana Island. (A National Geographic article details the fascinating history of this remote postal tradition.)

This discovery sparked a deeper exploration: How does mail actually get delivered? Students dove into books and learned how letters are stamped, sorted and carried to their destinations. Inspired by what they learned, JK students then designed their very own JK Parker Post Office complete with post office boxes and one-of-a-kind stamps!

Next, the community came together to create some mail for these budding postal workers to deliver. Faculty and staff members each wrote a quick note saying hello to anyone in the building; they addressed the note with the recipient's name, room number and floor; and they stopped by the Library, added a JK Post Office stamp and dropped it in the JK mailbox in the Library's Story Studio.

Finally, some very excited and proud Parker JK mail carriers delivered the notes!
