Parker Red Cross Club Sounds the Alarm

Upper School students in Parker’s Red Cross Club spent a morning installing smoke alarms to make others’ lives safer.

The fact that home fires claim seven lives every day, and having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half, fuels the American Red Cross’ annual drive to install free smoke alarms nationwide, as part of their Sound the Alarm initiative.

A team of five Upper School students traveled to Bolingbrook, Ill. to contribute their time and energy with other volunteers to install smoke detectors in homes as part of a recent Sound the Alarm event. Advisor and Upper School Counselor Winnie Kearns shared, “It was a full day of community building, and as our Red Cross liaison states, they ‘saved lives.’ I am really proud of these young people, and they are hoping to build participation in the program as one of their goals for the club next year.”

Parker students’ efforts helped install 97 alarms and made 121 lives safer in the Joliet and Bolingbrook areas.

Great work to all involved in doing “everything to help” those they can.
