Shredding Paper and Stacking Sneakers for a Greener Tomorrow

Sixth grade students combined efforts to create a more sustainable community through recycling, reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible practices.

Making real change in the world can feel like a daunting task, but every journey begins with a first step as 6th graders recently learned. Students decided to take action to make a difference in the fight against climate change, created a website and invited students, faculty and staff to support their efforts by:
  • Orchestrating a sneaker recycling fundraiser through GotSneakers
  • Organizing a shred day with a private company to pick up and recycle paper on site
  • Supporting environmentally friendly practices in the cafeteria
For two weeks, students promoted their efforts by putting clearly labeled shoe collection boxes on campus and staffing a “Snacks for Sneaks” table in the Front Alcove during arrival and dismissal, where people could trade in old shoes for tasty treats. Another team of students canvassed the school daily, collecting paper for recycling throughout campus. Students stored the materials they collected in the 6th grade science classroom, and the stacks grew a lot as time passed!

Based on the Parker community’s support of the 6th grade students’ successful efforts, the results included:
  • Collecting more than 150 pairs of sneakers for recycling and reuse via GotSneakers
  • Shredding 238 lbs. of paper
  • Interviewinh cafeteria staff, researching environmentally sustainable practices and planning strategies to promote more efficient composting and recycling in the lunchroom
Parker thanks everyone who helped support these students’ hard work to be better stewards of the environment, and the school looks forward to similar environmental endeavors in the future.
