Local Designer Visits Fashion Lab

Aspiring creators in the Upper School Fashion Lab course welcomed local designer Gregory Hill.

Teacher Kay Silva leads students in the design and construction of wearable works of art in Upper School Fashion Lab. During the semester, students learn fundamental fashion and costume design skills, including figure drawing, clothing design, sewing, garment construction, and alteration. With these skills, students get the opportunity to work on individually chosen projects, ranging from traditional to experimental and sculptural.

Recently, Silva invited Chicago designer Gregory Hill—known as uncle.greg.be.stitchin on Instagram and TikTok—to her class. Hill needed a dress form to drape fabric on for a plus-size model who he is designing for, and Silva was happy to help him out. In return, Hill agreed to talk shop with her Fashion Lab students.

Hill spoke to students about his work, process, and his mother as the source of his inspiration to be a designer. He demonstrated how to build up a dress form to replicate the size and shape of a model and how to drape and pin fabric on it to initially design his piece. Hill learned more about the pieces students were working on and had an opportunity to review their fabric selections.
