Math teacher Sven Carlsson was recognized with 2026 University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Awards.
For the past 30 years, this program has asked incoming freshmen at the University of Chicago to nominate teachers who have challenged them intellectually, opened new areas of discovery, or channeled their personal interests into paths for intellectual growth.
When Darius Cleaver ’26 discovered this program, he nominated Carlsson straight away.
“I've worked with him since he was in 7th grade, as he was one of our stars on the Middle School math team,” Carlsson shared about Cleaver. “Throughout COVID, we would Zoom each week, and he would share his various projects, which, at that time, were largely focused on world history, migration, and geography. Throughout Upper School, we stayed in close contact as he worked on his mathematical modeling, using predictive modeling to optimize everything from March Madness brackets to investment portfolios to his college search.”
When asked what it meant to him to be recognized for this award, Carlsson said, “The meaning is really a reminder—of what a privilege it is to be a teacher, to have one's life work be investing in the literal future hope of our world. I am really grateful to be a part of the Parker community. I have inspirational, devoted colleagues who teach and shape me even more than I teach and shape my students, phenomenal students who are the reason I smile every single day when driving to work, and a supportive administration that prioritizes the daily fulfillment of our mission; the development of our students into productive, caring, and civic-minded human beings; and the growth of our pedagogy as teachers. So, in short, it means I have a lot for which to be grateful.”
Although everyone at Parker understands how great Carlsson is and how lucky the school is to have him, Parker is extremely proud that his impact has been recognized by the University of Chicago.
Join us in congratulating him on this tremendous achievement!
