Photography and Architecture Students Turn City into Classroom

Upper School photography and architecture students turned the city into a classroom on a recent field trip.

Photography teacher Caroline Gardner wanted to give her students a hands-on opportunity to apply what they have learned in class following their study of Vivian Maier and her work. To make this happen, she took students downtown so they could practice street photography. Visual Arts Department Chair Travis Chandler’s Architecture students went on the architecture boat tour and enjoyed a walking tour of Chicago’s architectural landmarks, capturing photographs of notable examples along the way.

Both classes will use their photos as inspiration and reference for future projects. This fourth annual joint field trip between the two classes was a great success, highlighted by beautiful weather and the inspiring cityscapes of downtown Chicago.
