Members of the MS Scholastic Bowl Club have been meeting weekly to hone their skills in anticipation of competition in the spring.
MS Scholastic Bowl is a club in which members answer practice questions in different subject areas, such as math, science, literature, religion, mythology, philosophy, economics, history, music, art and current events, to have fun and prepare to compete with teams from different schools in academic knowledge competitions. Team members buzz in (much like the show Jeopardy!) to earn points for correct answers and collaborate on more in-depth questions.
Advisor and History teacher Alex Munro loves trivia, and when he saw there was an opening for an advisor of the MS Scholastic Bowl Club, he readily volunteered. “I felt it would be a fun opportunity to coach students and see them in a different space outside the classroom,” he said.
Munro practices with club members every Wednesday morning. Each table in his classroom hosts a team of students, seated around a buzzer, listening carefully to questions in hopes of being the first to buzz in with a correct answer. The level of energy and excitement as students practice is palpable, as Munro readily provides question after question for them to field.
The club will compete twice this spring: in the 16th Annual Jr. Wildcat Tournament in March and the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association Middle School Tournament in April.
Munro is excited about this year’s team, sharing, “We’ve had a strong turnout to start the year with all grade levels represented. The team is coming together nicely, and as their coach, I’m excited to see how they perform in the upcoming tournaments.” Parker’s Upper School Scholastic Bowl team, the
2025 IHSA Scholastic Bowl Regional Champions, is giving younger trivia lovers something to aspire to!
The school shares Munro’s excitement and looks forward to hearing more from the team this year.
