Upper School artists have begun work on a new mural celebrating immigrants that will be installed on campus before year’s end.
Art teacher Kay Silva is working with students in the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) mural club to develop a new mural to beautify campus. In a planning meeting to discuss possible themes inspired by current events, members became keenly aware that they were all children of immigrants or enslaved ancestors forced to migrate. This realization led the group to identify the mural’s theme: “Immigrants’ Journey,” which is personally meaningful to them.
On a recent weekend, Silva invited Chicago graffiti artist and art educator Elizabeth BEL Reyes to provide her students with a workshop on using spray-paint techniques in their mural. Silva and Reyes are children of immigrants and enthusiastically supported the theme. Parker students then applied what they learned as they spray painted the background layers of the piece.
Parker looks forward to watching this mural develop during the winter and its installation in the spring.
