Student Films Premiere at Parker

In their Creating Historical Documentaries course, teachers Travis Chandler and Dan Greenstone lead students through a close analysis of important historical documentaries to help them recognize qualities of exceptional films. Students combine this new visual knowledge with writing, research and storytelling techniques and direct involvement with all aspects of pre-production, shooting, lighting, interviewing, editing and more to create professional-quality videos.

Following December Recess, students shared work created during the first semester with their Upper School peers at a screening in Chandler’s classroom. Later, the class presented at Morning Ex, sharing more about their piece and process before screening excerpts for the Middle and Upper School audience and fielding questions about their work.

Chandler and Greenstone have co-taught this class since 2017. Eight pieces of student work emerging from their class have been shown at 15 film festival screenings, garnering three awards.
