Contribute Cans to a Lower and Intermediate School Service Project
The Lower and Intermediate school students are coordinating a service project this spring to help the Chicago community and the environment: an aluminum can drive. The collection with help in two ways:
Community: Raise funds for the Pilsen Food Pantry! Students will donate the aluminum cans to the Pilsen Food Pantry. The pantry works with a metal scraper to recycle aluminum. For every pound of aluminum, the Pilsen Food Pantry receives 70 cents, and for every $8 the pantry raises, they can supply 60 pounds of food to a family struggling with food insecurity.
Environment: Help the environment! Only about 10% of the materials placed in recycling bins ends up being recycled. Aluminum is one of the best materials to recycle because it can be recycled an infinite number of times. Recycling reduces the waste going into landfills, keeping aluminum in the recycling process and decreasing the amount of new aluminum being mined.
The students ask everyone to please recycle the cans from the cafeteria, and there will be collection boxes at both security entrances (and all around the school) to bring aluminum cans from home.
Every can counts! Please place empty aluminum cans in one of the collection boxes!
