Asian Alliance Brings Joy and Knowledge to Community at Lunar New Year MX

The Upper School Asian Alliance recently led the community through a fun and informative Morning Ex focusing on the Lunar New Year and its celebrations around the world.

To kick things off, a fashion show featured students and teacher showcasing traditional attire from the Philippines, Korea and China. Next, the Asian Alliance described the mythological and historical origins of the Lunar New Year and the Chinese Zodiac calendar. With this being the Year of the Horse, they mentioned some of its characteristics and the years that fall under this sign.

With this background information, Asian Alliance members talked about ways to celebrate the Chinese New Year festival, discussing activities, events and foods and the history behind them that are part of traditions in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and Vietnam.

To conclude, the Asian Alliance led the audience through two games. First, six volunteers participated in the Chopstick Game, racing each other in transfering increasingly difficult objects with chopsticks until only one winner remained. Second, volunteers came on stage for Old Eagle Catches Chicken, a traditional game in which one “eagle” worked to tag chickens in a line.

All those in attendance left with a better understanding of the importance of the Lunar New Year and the similarities and differences of worldwide celebrations.
