Help Parker Adopt an Elephant

Inspired by a Zoom experience with Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Upper School students are working to adopt an elephant.

Upper School Biology-1 Advanced Science students Zoomed with Cynthia Alarcon in January as part of an in-school field trip as part of their study of Africa. Alarcon is a conservation specialist from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. Through this exchange, students learned about the importance of conservation, biodiversity and keystone species. Alarcon showed students how elephants change the Savanna landscape and are critical spreaders of seeds across the ecosystem as they walk miles each day. She also pointed out that elephants are incredibly social and intelligent, and they form incredible bonds with humans at Sheldrick before they are gradually released into the wild.

Following the Zoom, students wanted to orchestrate a fundraiser to thank Alarcon for her time and also potentially adopt an elephant from her organization. They organized a bake sale on World Wildlife Day, and a great turnout of students, employees and parents/guardians helped them achieve their goal.

Before the group tallies their final contribution to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, they want to offer everyone the opportunity to donate to their cause. Anyone who’d like to donate may use the Venmo link here. The highest donors will receive one of two handmade tote bags that were a thank-you gift to the class.
