As Parker’s 9th annual Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholars in Residence, Grammy Award-winning, Chicago-based percussion quartet and composer collective Third Coast Percussion spent two days sharing their unique sound and deep knowledge of all things percussive across all divisions of the school and beyond.
While at the school, the artists interacted with 691 of Parker’s 940 students in a range of sonic engagements. Upper School band students performed for the musicians, received constructive feedback and enjoyed some live music by the group. Fifth grade students learned how elements of melody, rhythm and timbre combine to make percussive music and witnessed live performances as well. Percussion students throughout the school participated in special workshops, working directly with the visiting artists to refine their technique as individual musicians and acquire pointers from the pros on the best ways to work together as a group.
Third Coast Percussion offered multiple Morning Ex experiences during their time at Parker, tailoring different presentations to students in Junior Kindergarten through 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade and older students to make the content as accessible as possible for each audience.
The evening performance that capped off Third Coast Percussion’s visit to Parker was the most well-attended in the history of the Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholars in Residence program.
