Second grade students began the nonfiction writing unit by writing a chapter book on something that they felt they were an expert. They choose topics about which they care deeply. Some of the expert book topics were: emotional health, dance dreams, yummy sweets, video games and a variety of different sports. Students mentioned that they’ve been listening to my podcast, The Black Teacher Voice, and they felt inspired to create their own for their expert books.
Second graders were excited to brainstorm names for the podcast. They created a list and took a vote. The Book World of 2BW was the winning vote! Once they had a name, they used Canva to create cover art for the podcast. They mentioned that it would be important to include a microphone and bright, fun colors. There was a lot of conversation about what colors appealed to the eye, and even more voting took place. Decisions were well thought out, with everyone emphasizing what it means to discuss and compromise within the group decision-making.
They were very excited to go through the writing process of brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and preparing their expert books for publishing. Each student recorded themselves by setting up their iPad, plugging in the microphone and sharing their expert books with the world!
